I used dog proof for most if the coons. I have a live trap in the barn, trying to catch tom cats. One leg hold in the chicken house after 1 dead hen. Total so far; 6 coons, 5 opossums, 2 skunks and 1 groundhog. One possum, one skunk and one groundhog from the leg hold. 0 tom cats. All are pulled and waiting for Nov 15th.

I made pretty good money trapping back in the ‘70s. I haven’t trapped in years but still enjoy reading about it. It’s a real shame that the fur market is so depressed.

I am solely doing it for control. I have put a lot of work into my farm, timber stand improvement, edge weathering, brush piles and then predator control. I have a tremendous amount of turkeys and deer. I honestly believe the work is helping.

I have chickens so naturally I have varmints, I’ve found that not much can resist tuna or sardines in a live trap. I can bait 3 traps with one can and it’s enough to draw them in. Buy a quality live trap because a pissed off coon can wreak havoc on the cheap ones. I have found dog proof traps to be extremely useful inside the chicken pen.

In my experience, tom cats can be quite the tricky and cautious characters. They really seem to respond to strong-smelling wet food. Also, where you place the food is super important. They usually avoid open areas, so having some cover around the trap can make a bit of a difference.
