I used to turkey hunt near Crane Lake. We'd hunt in the morning and fish in the afternoon. One year the Conservation Dept sent their entire class of new agents to Crane Lake to practice checking for fishing licenses, etc. I got checked four times by four different rookie agents in less than two hours. My buds and I gave up trying to fish and headed back to camp.

When I was about 12, I was talking to a game warden about snakes. I told him that I had killed several cotton mouths. He told me that there was none in our part of Missouri. So one day I killed one and rode my bike to his office with it. He said it was a cotton mouth but I must have killed it elsewhere. Same thing with bears. I saw one on my uncle's farm. Game warden said there are none.

I have done a lot of hunting and fishing with a now retired agent and considered him a good friend, unfortunately we lost touch after he retired. In all my time in the outdoors over the last 60 plus years I have had a single negative experience. We have a fairly good sized deer camp and one cold morning we had 3 or 4 deer hanging from a tractor bucket skinning them. A female agent and a biologist drove past saw the deer and came back. Immediately, the agent jumped out of her vehicle and started barking orders, when she got to me I produced my deer tag as ordered. I had not killed any of the deer we were skinning and told her so. It was obvious that she didn't believe me but she stopped short of actually calling me a liar. I simply moved aside and struck up a conversation with the biologist, he seemed like a great guy and it was very obvious that he was embarrassed by the way she was acting. In the end, she ended up writing a ticket to a young man for not checking a deer, he had in fact tried to check the deer and made a mistake (didn't get the confirmation number) and it was very clear there was no intent but he got the ticket just the same. The deer were all legally tagged, notched as required.

Out of dozens of encounters over the years that was my single bad experience, hopefully she has moved on to an occupation that suits her better, like a prison guard in Siberia.
