I start at 25 yards, usually after bore sighting. Then move to 100 yards and put it where I want it. I actually just went through this process yesterday with a new rifle. I’m not home right now but I’ll post some pictures if I don’t forget.
For whatever reason, the target photos are displayed sideways as they were shot the right side is the top of both targets. This was the 25 yard sight in target, in the upper left corner just barely cutting the “bottom” of the paper is the first shot. Shots 2-4 are clustered on the dot.
This was the 100 yard target, again posted horizontally, top to the right. The top group was fired at the center bull and landed about 4” above and centered around a half inch to the left. I adjusted the scope and fired the group on the top orange bullseye, the center ring is 1” across. The bottom group was fired with another rifle as a control and the outlier is 100% my fault, normally those three would be touching. The new rifle is a Ruger American 2 chambered in .270 Winchester topped with a Leupold VX5 HD 3-15x44. The ammo is hand loaded with a 150 grain NOSLER Partition at a touch over 2900fps from the Rugers 22” barrel.
The bottom group was fired with another American 2 in .308 Winchester that I’ve had for a couple of years. For the first ten rounds fired from a brand new rifle, I’m pretty happy.
This is my standard sight in session for mounting a new scope. At this point, I’m ready to start load development.
