The conversation I had with my family that was uncomfortable but necessary

Where to meet if you can't get home, who calls who, what the plan is if we can't communicate and what the kids know about the neighbor who has a key. We sat around the table and worked through it all. It was uncomfortable for about twenty minutes but worth it for the clarity it created.

I remember going through that with my sons many years ago. Now they have done it with their kids.

I had that family meeting last 2 years and we talked about rally points, emergency contacts, who takes the dog. It was awkward for twenty minutes, but having that peace of mind made it worth it.

For years, I'd put off having that conversation, convinced it would just turn into some big drama. But when we finally sat down, it turned out to be nothing more than practical, really. After we talked, everyone just seemed to relax. Funny, isn't it? How just being clear can feel so much lighter than staying silent.
