I was at the range the other day, talking with a new shooter. This guy was enthusiastic and driven, but he was also overwhelmed with “advice” from every uncle and neighbor. It reminded me of the useful bits I got when I was starting out… and some of the junk I wish I could un-hear.

So I'm curious....

What’s the best and the worst shooting advice you’ve ever gotten? And if you could offer some wisdom to a new shooter, what would you share? Let’s get some insights from the experts!

Enroll in an NRA course, taught by certified instructors. Then, join a club that welcomes new shooters and ..have fun. Hunter safety course is important, not just for hunters, but also safety and general knowledge. Unlearning bad habits can be tough. Best to start out without bad advice.

There are a tremendous number of well intentioned and good shooters that can contribute to an inexperienced shooter's journey. BUT, few that relay the basics. Those with military (actual, not imagined) or familial were probably exposed multiple times to the same instructor or family member, then they attempt to compress intense periods or years of learning on an individual during a 10 minute range conversation. Great help after that person has the basics down, but simply confuses them if they have not had the learning time.
Agree with sheriffjohn, NRA or other gold standard class ensures the basics are understood, where not only firearms, but forearm safety is included.
