Fishing techniques in Missouri

Been fishing for many years in Missouri, and tried almost every fishing technique haha. Still, I like the Light Tackle a lot, Spinning, and Heavy Tackle. Is anyone else the same?

About 40 years ago I cleaned up all my fishing gear and put it away. Told myself that I can't use it until I learn to fly fish, guess I'll never use it again. Joined Mid-Missouri Trout Unlimited and have never looked back.

Same here, been at it for years and tried about everything.

When I take my kids out, light spinning tackle keeps it fun because even a small crappie bends the rod. But when I'm after big flatheads, nothing beats heavy tackle and a live bluegill on the hook.

Two different worlds but both get me hooked.

I mostly fish for trout anymore, and I use an ultralight spinning rod for that. I also enjoy grabbing suckers occasionally and use appropriate tackle. Any creek or river fishing is generally ultralight gear also.

Ultralight for trout is a blast. Do you ever find it underpowered if a big smallmouth grabs on in the creeks, or do you just play them out slow? I've thought about switching to ultralight for panfish and creek bass around the Ozarks too.

My 4 pound test ultralight set up will handle a pretty good smallmouth in open water with little trouble. You have to be careful to keep the fish away from root wads or they will break you off. Any more, with all the otters around a 2lb smallmouth is a pretty rare fish.
