For a first rifle......it's a slippery slope, you'll be back.....I'd suggest a .30-06 bolt action from any of the well known rifle manufacturers. They are widely available used in great condition offering great value for that first plunge, and it includes your "man card."

You'll never be second guessed for that opening choice. That caliber is very flexible 110-220grain bullets for speed goats, deer, hogs, on up to elk, even black'nbrown bear and moose You might as well get this caliber in your safe right from the start....a must have. And, 30-06 easily passes the Two Dot Test....you'll find ammo even in Two Dot, Montana. If a store is sellin ammo, they're sellin' 06. Once you've anchored that ole warrior in your safe, you're free to go crazy forever more.
