I'm on the hunt for my first rifle and could use some advice. I want something that can handle deer hunting, plus work for an occasional elk trip. Ive heard about the .45-70 and it sounds pretty solid. But then someone mentioned an AR-style in 12.7x42 mm, and while that seems fun. I’m not sure if it’s the best practical choice. What do you think? Any suggestions would be awesome!

My minimum with elk in the mix is a .270 Winchester. The good old .270 can be had in any action type and ammo is easy to find. The same can be said for the .30-06 and it’s not a bad choice either, perhaps a little better with elk in mind. The AR style rifles are fun at the range and good for some things but they may not be legal in some places and the cartridges they are chambered in are limited. Will the AR do the job ? Sure will, but there are better options IMHO.
The .45/70 is a great cartridge and will work on anything in North America, but once again it’s a specialized tool. A great close range thumper, the big heavy .45 caliber bullets slow down pretty quick and the trajectory gets pretty steep after 150 yards or so. You don’t mention a budget but you can find a decent new rifle in the 5-6 hundred dollar range and a decent scope for around $300.00 plus rings and bases if they don’t come with the rifle.

The .45-70 is definitely worth considering. It's got that classic appeal and a reputation for taking down big game that’s hard to beat. On the other hand, if you’re after something a bit more modern and flashy, the AR chambered in .50 Beowulf is great.
For a first rifle......it's a slippery slope, you'll be back.....I'd suggest a .30-06 bolt action from any of the well known rifle manufacturers. They are widely available used in great condition offering great value for that first plunge, and it includes your "man card."
You'll never be second guessed for that opening choice. That caliber is very flexible 110-220grain bullets for speed goats, deer, hogs, on up to elk, even black'nbrown bear and moose You might as well get this caliber in your safe right from the start....a must have. And, 30-06 easily passes the Two Dot Test....you'll find ammo even in Two Dot, Montana. If a store is sellin ammo, they're sellin' 06. Once you've anchored that ole warrior in your safe, you're free to go crazy forever more.Agree with this.
